La Joux Perret modified ETA / Valjoux 7753 tri-compax day / date chronograph
full disassembly and an incredible look into this high grade luxury micro machine by Dan Spitz
This is the highly modified La Joux Perret Valjoux 7753.
Imagine an outside source company that takes a base ETA / Valjoux 7753 movement and modifies many parts and finish to an extremely high standard of excellence. Just like a car modifier or motorcycle modifier.
We have Cote's de Geneve, as well as Geneva striping here and quantified technical micro mechanical modifications. This is a wonderful chronograph that has been around for 25 years as well as all the bugs are gone a long time ago. It is used in many high grade timepieces and parts can be supplied to your local high grade watchmaker for service until your long gone. You need not send any watch that has this movement back to the original manufacturer for service intervals, saving you time and money.
There is a new version of this caliber from La Joux that has replaced many parts and re manufactured many to upgrade the movement to an incredible column wheel version. It is being used in the Panerai's and Hublot big bangs. So up near the $10,000-$30,000 luxury range. I find this movement unbeatable for everyday wear, and wear one myself.
Have a look at me disassembling one completely for service in the pictures. Note that I would compare this incredible micro machine to a Benz meets a Bentley meets an Acura NSX in its robustness for taking any beating known to mankind thrown at it, and that it is a REAL chronograph, not a modular in any form or fashion. The date side is quite complicated as well. It contains the hammers and friction hour registers as well as the day and date functions and comes in many other varieties of complications as well.
This chronograph movement is also the meat and potatoes of the entire Panerai line in it's striped down and modified form. All the chronograph functions are removed and only the 9 o'clock sub seconds indicator and date ring are left for usage. New plates on the chrono side are re manufactured and the entire movement now is at it's base form for rock solid no complication beating. It's also the main movement in all Breitling Navitimers. This should tell you all something.
I like movements that never come back for service and can be used as a daily beater at a high level of execution. This one and it's derivatives as well as the Frederique Piguet 1185 and 1186 are the top two in my eyes.
