Christophe Claret makes as close to what is perfection there is for many companies. When we work on one as a Watchmaker we open her up and kind of sit back for a couple minutes just inspecting. Kind of like the old days when movements were made to last forever. You look at a wheel thickness on a vintage piece and you see the berrilium bronze made of the highest content and quality and the wheel made rippin' thick. Nowadays it's usually CNC machined by robots and made as thin as possible to execute the same function and work for a select amount of time and then break. They actually test each part for length of time until it breaks in its position. The old part is then thrown away and replaced. In the old days we hit the lathe and fixed the part. It was worth that amount of time to save it. It WAS art.

Claret kind of draws that middle line of the two. Some of the worlds most complicated mechanisms have been dreamed by others and have come to life from his workshops. No one else could have executed them . Period.

Doing something like this movement has a no time limit repair. Could be a day, a week, a month or two years. When it's done it's done. It's that complicated.

There is nothing even 50% close in quality to the Marshall triangle staking set ever made on planet earth. Never will be either. I've used the drilling attachment but prefer a Levin micro drill for exactness. Much better runout. For a new set the biggest STAR brand set is very good and used throughout all the complication rooms I frequent in Switzerland. Jules Borel now carries the set after I made them get me one a few years back. They get it from bergeon. :-)
Another vintage set that is fantastic, but I don't think exists over here was made by Seitz. Yes they made a staking set. It's basic, but simply awesome. Seriously rare to find anywhere.

I'm a tool freak.

Fantastic watch. Read a great story on Claret in HT and the watches are beyond art.
Ever use the drilling attachment for that Marshall staking set? That has got to be the single greatest staking set ever made.
I know you are doing music again, but I hope you don't give up the watches. Good luck with everything.<div id='wpcr_tags'>Comment Tags: <a href='/2010/06/27/tourbillon-repair-2-leviev-christophe-claret/feed/comment-tag/watchmaker'>Watchmaker</a></div>
